Theory of Art & Design coursesUndergraduate coursesSingle degreesBesides providing core and elective Theory units in undergraduate studio courses, and teaching research methodologies to honours and postgraduate students in art and design, the Department also offers several specialised Theory programs. Interested students may specialise in art and/or design theory as a major study within the Bachelor of Visual Arts in Art & Design. Students enrolled in the Monash Bachelor of Arts may also take Theory units towards a Visual Culture minor or major. Units offered include core surveys of modern and postmodern art and design theory, and studies of art criticism, cyberculture, photography and photomedia, popular culture and fashion. Qualified students may specialise in Theory at Honours level, taking out the Honours degree of Bachelor of Visual Arts (Theory) or the Honours degree of Bachelor of Arts (Visual Culture). Advanced theory and methodology units complement a thesis written under supervision. Double degrees
Postgraduate coursesMA and PhD programs are also available for students working on theoretical topics. In each case, examination is by thesis only, with expert supervision provided by relevant Theory staff. The MA is normally completed in 2 years full-time, and the PhD in 4 years full-time (part-time enrolment is also possible). |
