Theory studies involve engagement with the wide variety of concepts and ideas informing contemporary art and design, together with recognition of the history of visual traditions.

At undergraduate level, theory units provide studio students (in Fine Arts, Design, Multimedia & Architecture courses) with the intellectual tools and critical language with which to consider and discuss their own and others’ practice, and develop their own work further. Units offered range from introductory surveys of art, design and architecture, to advanced examination of the theories underpinning contemporary art and design, both in Australia and internationally.

Interested students may also undertake dedicated theory studies, either as a major stream within the Bachelor of Visual Arts (and double degrees), or through the Visual Culture major of the Bachelor of Arts.

Theory also forms a key component of honours level studies, and may also be undertaken as a specialist discipline at honours, MA and PhD levels, under expert supervision.
