Electronic Media Art

Eltronic Media Art

At Monash, students wishing to explore the area of Electronic Media Art can study within the Centre for Electronic Media Art (CEMA) which is a joint initiative of the faculties of Art & Design and Information Technology. This option is available to postgraduate students via the Master of Fine Art and/or the Master of Design (by research).

Typically, artists and designers who create electronic media art works come from a diverse range of backgrounds and disciplines. Characterised as a field of interdisciplinary activity, electronic media art is one of the results of the exchange between cultures of art and science inspired by the convergence of disciplines in contemporary media and technology.

At Monash, students focus on artworks that involve the development of computer software solutions for novel creative problems in electronic media art. As such, it is suited to individuals with existing skills and expertise in computer science and software engineering, multimedia and digital arts, or, in some cases, both. Topics include procedural modelling, artificial life & animation; evolutionary simulation & synthesis; computer graphics and special effects; experimental interaction design, digital games and virtual worlds.

CEMA research includes the theory of generative techniques and their practical application to electronic art. Rigour from both scientific and aesthetic perspectives is considered paramount.

Research within CEMA includes interfaculty supervision across Art & Design and Information Technology; computer labs with industry standard software; professional digital video and photomedia studios; and access to research studios at both Clayton and Caulfield campus.
