Step twelve: changing your enrolment

You change your units after enrolment day

If you discover that you don't like one or more of your units, it is possible to discontinue from them, and take up other units in their place during the first two weeks of any semester. To do this you will need to officially discontinue the unit, and if you are replacing it with another one, enrol in the new unit, which can usually be done via the WES.

If you wish to pick up a new unit after week two you will need written permission from the department or lecturer running the unit and then need to submit an Enrolment Amendment Form to the Faculty’s Student & Administrative Services Unit located on ground floor of the Fine Arts building on the Caulfield campus.

The key to changing your enrolment is timing

There are deadlines by which you can:

  • discontinue a unit AND take up a new one without paying any fees OR have it showing on your academic transcript;
  • discontinue a unit (but not take up a new one) without paying any fees, BUT having it show as WD (withdrawn) on your academic transcript;
  • discontinue a unit, BUT you have to pay tuition fees* AND it will show as WD (withdrawn) on your transcript;
  • discontinue a unit, PAY tuition fees* and have it show on transcript as a FAIL.

* Students who are studying on a CSP basis would also have the relevant unit(s) count towards their Student Learning Entitlement (SLE) if they failed to discontinue it by the required deadlines.

A comprehensive list of all Monash University Principal Dates can be found at Monash University Principal Dates Website

Students are also encouraged to look in the Student Resource Guide 2009 (SRG) which is located at Monash University Student Resource Guide website. The Student Resource Guide 2009 is published as a companion to the 2009 undergraduate and postgraduate handbook.  Together, these publications set out the information you need to make the most of your educational opportunities.

The SRG includes everything you need to know about your rights and responsibilities as a student, as well as information about the facilities, services and student clubs available at each of the university’s campuses. It also explains university policy and decision-making processes, including those which students can access to ensure their interests are represented.

Missing certain deadlines means you will have to pay for a unit(s) regardless of whether you completed the required assessment or stopped attending classes. Missing these deadlines could cost you thousands of dollars over the duration of your whole course. All important deadline dates are listed in the Principal Dates section of the Monash Website, look in the Student Resource Guide, or ask at the Faculty’s Student & Administrative Services Unit located on ground floor of the Fine Arts building on the Caulfield campus.

When you change your enrolment you should always keep in mind your overall course structure. You have the opportunity to change your enrolment without penalty during the first two weeks of each semester, either via your my.monash portal or in person at the Faculty’s Student & Administrative Services Unit. If you wish to get some course advice during this period you should contact the Faculty’s Student & Administrative Services Unit.
