Professor Sigrid Schader
Prof. Dr. Sigrid Schade was born in Darmstadt, Germany. From 1973 – 1977, she studied art history, German studies and empirical cultural studies at the Universität Tübingen and the Warburg Institute at the University of London. She completed her doctoral studies in 1982 with a dissertation on the portrayal of witches in the 16th century. She worked as an intern at the Staatliche Sammlungen Kassel and as a visiting lecturer at the Universities of Marburg, Kassel, Zurich and Bern.
She was a research fellow at the TU Berlin from 1986 – 91 and at the Kulturwissenschaftlichen Institut Essen from 1991 – 93. Following visiting and deputy professorships at the Universität Tübingen and the Humboldt Universität Berlin, Sigrid Schade habilitated in 1994 at the Universität Oldenburg in the Department of Art History and Cultural Studies on, “Körperbilder und ihre Lektüren. Studien zum Einsatz von Körpersprachen in Kunst und Fotografie des 16. bis 20. Jahrhunderts”.
From 1994-2005, she was Professor of Cultural Studies and Aesthetic Theory in the Department of Cultural Studies at the Universität Bremen (on leave since March 1, 2002). In 2002, she was appointed head of the newly founded Institute (initially Department) for Cultural Studies at the ZHdK. As guest curator, Sigrid Schade supervised exhibition projects and produced programs for various broadcasting stations (Österreichischer Rundfunk). She was responsible for and involved in numerous conferences and symposiums.
