Environment, Object and Space (EOS)

The Environment, Object and Space (EOS) research cluster focuses on individual and group activities that form the basis of our understanding of sculptural objects in our environment as both artefact and entity.  EOS enables flexible and rapid progress of research themes which are responsive to innovation, speculation and collaboration whilst exploring internally and externally research opportunities. The cluster reflects staff interests and supports the development of knowledge and understanding across the members' range of expertise.

With particular emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches across 3-D studios including: Ceramics, Glass and Sculpture – this group is committed to the advancement of mixed media practice in its broadest terms in forming innovative initiatives across traditional and contemporary methodologies associated with conceptual innovation, material studies and the development of new technologies.

In forging cross-discipline practices, the role of the environment (natural and built) is recognised as potential formats that embrace modes of installation and site-specific practices related to particular themes of extending boundaries of studio practice.

The operation of this cluster is directed towards opportunities in both the public and private realms - with prominence in developing synergies between the 'object', public art exercises, architecture and the environment.

Aims

• To meet regularly to support individual and collaborative research in fine art practice and discuss ongoing research projects and future opportunities.
• To co-ordinate and document the development of researchers in the group and facilitate cross-disciplinary and collaborative discourse.
• To create an environment in which researchers can share knowledge, information, expertise, seek advice, feedback and support in all aspects of research amongst members where appropriate.
• To promote research activities of cluster members within the Department, Faculty and external institutions.
• To consolidate efforts in developing grant applications relevant to the cluster.
