Frequently Asked Questions - Publication Collection

When should the work have been conducted?

Only publications published/exhibited in the 2006 calendar year are to be included.

When do I need to submit for the collection?

The call for publications occurs at the end of the year in which the works are published and you are given a few months to complete the task.  You have until the end of February 2007 to submit to the collection of 2006 publications (2007 HERDC Collection).  The information will be checked and inputted into Research Master, but you may be contacted to provide additional information if required.

Who can submit into the collection?

  • a person employed by Monash University or a controlled entity of Monash University
  • an employee of another institution who was working at Monash University as visiting, exchange, seconded or honorary staff members at the time
  • a person who worked for Monash University on a regular basis but received no remuneration (e.g.unpaid visiting fellows).
  • A candidate for a higher education award at the time the research leading to the publication was conducted. This includes undergraduate, honours, masters and doctoral students.

How do I know if a publication is refereed?

When selecting the publication category it is important to know if the publication has been subject to peer-review.  You can check various ISI listings or Ulrich’s to see if a publication is refereed:

http://www.ulrichsweb.com.ezproxy.lib.monash.edu.au/ulrichsweb/

You can use this tool to search for a publication by keyword, title, subject or ISSN.  A symbol that looks like a small T-Shirt next to the publication name depicts a refereed publication.

Sometimes the journal will state if contributions are refereed so you can simply check the publication.

What is an ISSN?

The ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) is a unique code for the identification of serial publications. It can be used wherever information on serials needs to be recorded or communicated. The ISSN is the serials equivalent of the ISBN (International Standard Book Number).

The ISSN should appear in a prominent position on each issue, i.e. near the title or publisher details. The number should always be printed in two groups of four digits separated by a hyphen.

Are electronic publications allowed?

Electronic Works are eligible to be counted, provided they meet all the relevant criteria in these specifications for the publication category against which they are being claimed.  A print out of the material is required and page numbers are assigned according to the print out.
