Research output

My research focuses on modern and contemporary Asian art histories, compelling examinations of the Euro-American biases of art history, and highlighting the constituent role of Asian art and artists in larger world projects of modern and contemporary art history and theory.

My current ARC DECRA research project (DE170100455) explores new public participation in Asian art and museums in Asia. I was previously an ARC Postdoctoral Fellow at the Australian National University (ANU) from 2010–2013 for the project, 'The Rise of New Cultural Networks in Asia in the Twenty-First Century' (DP1096041) which researched the emergence of new regional and international networks of contemporary Asian art and museums.

My ongoing research focuses on the contemporary art histories of Southeast Asia on which I have published widely. My major publications on contemporary Asian art are Reworlding Art History: Encounters with Contemporary Southeast Asian Art after 1990 (Brill | Rodopi, 2015) and as co-editor with Caroline Turner, Contemporary Asian Art and Exhibitions: Connectivities and World-making (ANU Press, 2014). I was Co-convenor for the major international conference The World and World-Making in Art: Connectivities and Differences (ANU 2011), and a Convenor and Lecturer at the ANU for courses on Asian and Pacific art and museums.
