About AAANZ

The Art Association of Australia and New Zealand, Inc. is a professional body representing some three hundred art historians, critics, curators, artists and students. It was founded in 1974, and in 1999 was extended to include New Zealand. The AAANZ has two principal activities. The first is promoting collegiality and the exchange of ideas by organising an annual conference.

The conference is convened by a different university department each year (with the assistance of neighbouring institutions such as state museums). The conference runs for two and a half days and includes major national or international keynote speakers (one of whom is designated the Franz Philip Lecturer, in memory of the distinguished Melbourne art historian).

The conference is the discipline's primary venue for the presentation of original research. Some twenty scholarly panels cover varying aspects of art history, cinema studies, art criticism and museum studies. Panel convenors and paper presenters are solicited early each academic year. Postgraduate students are particularly encouraged to present papers.
