International Design student wins 2007 VDA Design Award

Industrial Design student Ka Lun Tam (Alan) has won the 2007 VDA Design award for a sustainable and emotional car design, beyond the limousine. Alan, a fourth year student, was the only International student to receive the award with all other winners currently studying in Germany.

Alan was flown to Germany where he accepted the award at the IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt. The award was presented by Mercedes-Benz Chief Designer, Professor Peter Pfeiffer, along with a six-month internship at Mercedes-Benz in Japan.

The VDA Design Award is intended to give young international designers, who are new to the profession, an opportunity to develop their vision of the individual transport of the future. The Award works in cooperation with Audi, BMW, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagon, and Opel with each winner receiving an internship with one of these major car manufacturers.

Alan decided to enter the competition to expand his final year folio. His focus had always been on designing motorcycles. “Before I got this award I was planning to finish my design and try to get work with motorcycle companies but now I haven’t drawn anything but cars” he said. Alan hopes to begin his internship in 2008 in Japan.
