Glass Art at Monash
In 2010, the Glass Studio at Monash University celebrated its 30th anniversary. The studio has offered courses in glass art since the mid 70's making it the oldest tertiary glass studio in Australia. It continues to run the only degree course in Victoria within the Department of Fine Arts, Faculty of Art & Design. The purpose designed studio remains one of the most uniquely situated studios in the world, residing on top of a seven-story building with panoramic views of Melbourne and the surrounding suburbs. Monash carries with it a reputation for excellence in expert tuition. As a result, numerous graduates from these courses are successful practicing artists both nationally and internationally. From beginners to practicing artists, participants will find these courses valuable in terms of gaining glass working skills, to assist in folio preparation and for teaching purposes. Join us to explore this exciting medium. Short CoursesFusing & Slumping Learn how to make fused & slumped glass bowls, platters, panels & fused glass jewellery. We will cover glass cutting, firing schedules, loading of kilns, slumping, finishing techniques, sandblasting & engraving. Beginning Glass Blowing This course is intended for beginners who have little or no experience with molten glass. Emphasis will be placed on the skills necessary to complete simple paperweights and blown vessels. Open Mould and Lost Wax Casting In this workshop students will cast a bass-relief sculpture from a clay original, and a three-dimensional sculpture from a wax original in lead crystal. All technical aspects will be covered from mould making, wax sculpting and firing schedules to polishing techniques. This class is suitable for beginners and previous short Ceramics In this workshop, students will learn design processes, materials, forming methods and technical procedures associated with ceramic design. This course is an introduction to hand building, wheel throwing, glazing techniques, kiln firing schedules and loading of kilns. Materials and Equipment: Essential materials and tools are provided. Others are available from Monash Fine Art Store on the day. Unsurpassed in its ability to reflect and transmit light, glass is a beautiful material to work with.
