Constanze Zikos's sequin spangled banner
is a playful repetition of Federation Day 1901. The
Australian flag symbolises the drawing together of
national identity to grant Australia a certain autonomy
from Britain, but Federation day celebrates and repeats
in advance all the Australian flags yet to be unfolded.
Historical monuments are a special kind of ornamentation
because they express the repetition of decorama's rhythms
into the future; they are signs posts of an eternal
return. The abstract design of a flag is destined to be
repeated in different ways as the drama of national
identity unfolds. Zikos has produced a range of
variations on the Australian flag, using wood paneling,
Jewish stars, and gaudy colours. The Wall Drawing
version, complete with tassles and a curtain rail
support, sustains the glitzy tempo and assures us that
there are more to be unvieled. |
