Jacinta Schreuder, Body
and Bounce variable, 1995
|
Jacinta Schreuder harnesses the
distending forces of decorama in abstract motifs which
are on the verge of bursting and dissipating in the
theatre of life. Her overblown floral fresco, derived
from a Chinese food packaging design, and the body n'
bounce coiffures, which evoke stylised fashion
fantasies, playfully ride the waves of decorative
exuberance. I've heard her speak of an irony in her work,
but I'm impressed by how her fascination with popular
culture illuminates the overlooked details until they
shine with an inner transparency. Her work lingers on the
surface, savouring the iridescent uncertainty of
appearance and beauty as it unfurls from fetishized
objects to become the slippery lining of the habitats we
occupy. |
