The 1970s began with 2001 Space Odyssey, and the
falling of the Westgate Bridge.
My teacher was in tears when she heard that her husband was killed.
He worked on the bridge which towered up into
the sky.
She told us that a pet pig was kept there, to keep
the workmen happy.
The pig was also killed.
Mum would take the four of us to the pictures in the
forum to see 2001 Space Odyssey.
Off we went into our blue Morris which had rabbit ears.
We had to catch the chain ferry to get to Melbourne
on the other side.
There was Mum, who insisted on wearing the same
shoes for eight years.
Then there were my two older bothers, my sister and myself.
I was the youngest.
I did not know what the film was
about
I was bored
So I would stand, run up the stage and sing Nancy
Sinatra’s: "These boots are made for walking." Mum
said she would never take me to the cinema again.
