Mary

At primary school they called me Mary.
The other kids told me that I was half boy and half girl.
When I was nine, my teacher told me that if I did not
play football, I would not grow up to be a real man.
I was perplexed.
Why would I want to be a real man?
I wanted to be in the middle.
Neither man nor woman.
I loved animals.

They did not care what I was.
