Starlie Geikie

Sculptural installation
23 June to 14 July

Starlie Geikie’s practice analyses and questions the traditional associations of craft, with a particular emphasis on the feminine psyche. Techniques such as embroidery and quilting are recontextualised through sculpture and two-dimensional work, drawing into question the implied passivity of the craft act.

This exhibition takes traditional ‘feminine’ ways of working such as embroidery and tapestry, often unjustly relegated to a minor place in art history, and turbocharges them with ambitious scale and unexpected materials.

The exhibition runs until Friday 18 July when the artist will be present at the public ‘closing’ at 5 – 7 pm.
Switchback gallery is at building 6S, Monash Gippsland and is open weekdays 9 – 5.
