From This Distance: Kirrily Hammond

August 26 to September 7

From this distance is an exhibition of paintings, prints and drawings by Melbourne-based artist Kirrily Hammond. Drawing inspiration from recent travels, Hammond has created a new body of works based on the local Gippsland landscape, as well as the remote Fiordlands of New Zealand. Spanning an eleven-year period, the exhibition also features several works from the late 1990s, which relate directly to more recent works.

Attuned to the poetics of the industrial landscape, the paintings that form the
‘Gippsland Twilight’ series are Hammond’s most recent works. With the cinematic
aura of a road movie, they suggest a journey into night. Headlights glow in the
distance as darkness descends over the landscape. They are unusual paintings that
feel contained, as if we are inside and looking out.

Poised midway between reason and intuition, between objective and subjective
worlds, Hammond’s vision is intimate, rich in emotion and wonder. Her works
encourage a view that there are infinite possible worlds beyond our everyday lives.
Like dream images, they continue to haunt us on the other side of waking. “
