Communication Design at Monash

Communication design is a rapidly evolving profession. As print, screen and interactive media converge and new technologies emerge, designers must be competent visual communicators who can work across a multitude of platforms. From traditional print to digital media and motion graphics, new communication designers work with typography, images, colour, space, sound and spatial frameworks. They engage in innovative creative practice across a broad range of communication processes, from printed posters, books and digital publications, to interactive information design and 3D animation. They have the confidence to adapt as our world changes around us.

The new Communication Design degree at Monash has been developed to enable you to become an independent, enquiring and responsible designer across a range of platforms of production. At Monash you develop skills in visual communication, multimedia and motion graphics so you graduate with an industry-relevant qualification and an extensive folio showcasing your complex skills and conceptual maturity across a variety of media and communication platforms.

As media platforms converge, and new technologies emerge, industry now expects designers to be skilled across multiple media. The changing face of magazines illustrates this need for multi-skilled designers perfectly. As print magazines move online, graphic designers must incorporate interactivity and motion graphics into their layouts, illustrations and advertisements. Conversely digital designers must now understand the role of traditional design disciplines, such as branding, typography and illustration, as such areas become more prominent in the digital space.
