Statement

Ken Smith's current investigative activity is revealed in drawings and paintings produced on site, in the open, in a range of landscape environments and represent his responses to the phenomena of place, time, light and atmosphere.

While the notion of beauty as a legitimate aesthetic endeavour is now challenged by Post-modern sensibilities, the continually renewed wonder in the sensory delights of the world remains stubbornly persistent and apparent even to those whose erudition makes them wary of a glib and all too easily arrived at expression of them.

So for a contemporary artist to be meaningfully engaged with a tradition of image making requires both an awareness of historical precedents and an unprejudiced openness to the possibilities of the present.
