Professor John RedmondPosition Title: Dean, Faculty of Art & Design Qualifications:
Statement Professor Redmond is Foundation Dean of the Faculty of Art & Design, and holds a Chair in Industrial Design at Monash University. His position as Dean has involved the transformation of Monash's art and design activities into a full Faculty of the University, and has involved major course, research, marketing and infrastructure developments, including a major new award-winning building by Denton Corker Marshall. He was responsible for changing the Faculty's focus to research and research-led teaching and for overseeing the development of the Faculty's studio based Masters & PhD program, which is now one of the largest in the world. He was also responsible for planning, developing, and initiating the Faculty's new architecture program. Prior to taking up this position, he was the Foundation Head of the Department of Industrial Design at the University of New South Wales. Professor Redmond is a graduate of the Royal College of Art in London, and a Fellow of the Design Institute of Australia. His research has been particularly focussed on design research for industry and has been undertaken for major Australian and international companies such as Johnson & Johnson, as well as national industry research corporations. Other work has ranged from equipment for the handicapped to work in the theory of form. It is this work that saw him appointed by the Attorney General as a Consultant to the Law Reform Commission's Review of the Design Act. He was a member of the Design Committee for the Sydney Olympic Games. He is Chair of the Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA) Committee, and chaired the 2006 Victorian Government Premier's Design Awards. In 2008, he was one of a select few designers and architects appointed as a delegate to the Federal Government's 2020 Summit, to plan new directions for the nation. |
