Prior to teaching, Jo graduated from the South Australian Institute of Technology and worked for 15 years as an interior architect, designing and implementing large-scale corporate fit-out projects.

While completing the Monash University Graduate Certificate of Higher Education, she became interested in how tertiary student learning is affected by their physical place of learning, with emphasis on the social context of their learning experience. This evolved into a postgraduate research topic, and more recently, PhD candidature.

Jo has published national and international papers as well as presented at a number of conferences, largely through her membership of TEFMA, CEFPI and SCUP.
