Statement

Before commencing his academic career at Monash, Gene Bawden worked as a senior designer for both of Melbourne's major daily newspapers; The Age for six years, and The Herald Sun for two. While his principle interests lie in editorial design and effective distribution of visual information, he also maintains a practice in illustration. His illustrations have regularly featured in The Herald Sun and The Age as well as other smaller publications.

Teaching design has been a rewarding and challenging career shift for Gene. It permits an interaction with enthusiastic and articulate young designers prepared to challenge the accepted norms of the graphic design industry. This energy provides the working core of his teaching, research and studio practice undertaken at Monash.


Research/Professional activities

"The Abbreviated image": a retrospective exhibition of 10 years illustration practice.
Continued contributions as an illustrator, most recently in Domain (The Age building and architecture supplement.)

Annual judge for the Melbourne Press Club Quill Awards (Best Graphic Design, Best Illustration)
Exhibited at the 2004 Asian Pacific Design Exchange Exhibition, Osaka.

International Exchange Exhibition for Design and Craft 2004, Gyeonggi-do, Korea.
