Associate Professor Domenico de ClarioPosition title: Head, Department of Fine Arts Qualifications:
Associate Professor de Clario was born in Trieste, Italy, in 1947 and migrated to Australia in 1956. From 1966 until 1970 he studied Architecture and Town Planning at the University of Melbourne and was awarded an Italian Government Scholarship to study Painting at the Accademia di Brera in Milan in 1967-8. After variously teaching Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, Performance and Installation at RMIT between 1973 until 1996, Associate Professor de Clario completed an MA in Performance Studies in the Faculty of Human Development at Victoria University in 1998, and completed his PhD in the same Faculty in 2001. Beyond the above-mentioned disciplines, Associate Professor de Clario’s multi-disciplinary practice has included sound-performances as well as writing. He has published two volumes of poems and 4 CD's, and in the last decade his performances have been based on a series of original translations he has made of writers such as Eugenio Montale and Italo Calvino. He has exhibited and performed in museums and galleries in the U.S., Europe, South America and Asia, as well as in major art institutions throughout Australia. Associate Professor de Clario has presented his works at numerous Festivals and Biennales such as PIAF (1995), the Adelaide Festival of the Arts (1976, 1982, 2002), the Melbourne International Festival (1998) and the inaugural Liverpool Biennial (1999). He was responsible for the thematic structure of the Venice Carnevale of 2000 and therein presented a 7-part performance based on Calvino's 'Invisible Cities'. Since 1966 he has held more than 120 solo exhibitions of paintings, drawings and prints, as well as installations and performances, and has been invited to exhibit in more than 100 group shows. These solo and group shows have been held in Germany, France, Italy, Greece, Spain, Yugoslavia, Poland, Thailand and New Zealand, Chile, Brazil, the USA, the UK, Canada, Israel and Mexico, as well as in all Australian capital cities. He has been awarded numerous residencies and grants by the Australia Council, including the Greene Street Studio in New York (1991), the Paretaio Studio in Tuscany (1984), the inaugural Visual Arts Board Cross-Media Fellowship (1994), and the prestigious Australia Council Fellowship in 1996-8. He was awarded an Asialink grant for a 4-month Residency at Silpakorn University in Bangkok in 1998, and was invited to the Govett Brewster Gallery in New Plymouth, New Zealand, for a three-month Residency also in 1998. He is represented in all major public and private collections in Australia, including the MOMA in New York, as well as in numerous private collections world-wide Prior to joining the Faculty of Art & Design, Associate Professor de Clario was Head, School of Contemporary Arts within the Faculty of Communication and Creative Industries at Edith Cowan University in Perth. |
